Everyone seems to have one major gripe with Household Insurance cover, the small print!

However, Household Insurance is one of those areas of insurance where you get what you pay for – if you want a cheap service then you cannot expect comprehensive cover, and will often see an increase in your excess payment. Having worked in the home loans industry for quite some time, household insurance cover is something that people rather go without. In fact it's one of those covers that you can rarely get away from. Once your bond is registered, if the bond originator that you've done your home loan through doesn't manage to get his insurance brokers to call you, be sure that the banks will have theirs ontop of you in seconds.

That said, many people have found major issues with their Household Insurance small print, with certain items being exempt, or even increased excess payments for certain household goods. So the real question here is, is Household Insurance really required?

Personally, hell yes....
If you need to cover what could turn out to be a massive financial cost to you, I don't suggest you do without it.

What happens if there was a fire and you lost all of your possessions, could you cover the cost of that?

What if your house was flooded and you needed to be rewired, could you cover the cost of that?

As well as covering individual items, Household Insurance also covers you against such things as fire and theft, although simple accidents within the home are probably more common than these two factors. In all honesty, Household Insurance is a necessity not an option as it would be complete madness to build up your household goods and not have them covered – why would you even consider no cover?

So our tip for household insurance cover would be, READ the fine print and get QUOTES from more than one broker before accepting the offer!
