While many years ago few would even have heard of Sports Star Insurance, it is now a very large sector of the insurance market and one which often involves tens of millions of dollars. In reality the area of Sports Star Insurance involves covering the value of an investment, i.e. a footballer, a basketball player or anyone else involved in any sport.

When you look at football, we are seeing some players changing hands for upwards of £20 million pounds, with the UK record over £30 million for one player. Imagine if you were Manchester United and you had just bought your star player for £20 million, what would happen if he broke his leg tomorrow and was unable to play? This is why the premiums created in this market are enormous, because the insurance market is covering mishaps and accidents on “assets” often worth tens of millions of pounds. The terms of the policies and the actually travel arrangements of the players can conflict at times, with the English world cup team unable to fly to a recent world cup together, because they were unable to find an insurer willing to cover a plane. When you consider that the assets on the plane would have been valued in excess of £100 million it is a little easier to understand why nobody wanted to take that risk!
